The Port and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has organised a leadership seminar for senior officers as part of efforts to strengthen leadership capacity, professionalism, teamwork and service delivery at the Command.
The initiative, according to the Command, was organised in line with the vision of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, PhD, MFR, FNIPR, PSC+, to build a more efficient, motivated and service-oriented workforce.
Declaring the seminar open, the Acting Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Nura Ibrahim Miko, emphasised the importance of effective leadership in achieving the core mandates of the Nigeria Customs Service, particularly revenue generation, trade facilitation and suppression of smuggling.
Miko said strong leadership was essential to creating an organisation where officers could work effectively as a team, uphold professional standards and respond appropriately to the evolving demands of customs administration.
He noted that the Command remained committed to initiatives aimed at promoting the welfare, health and productivity of its officers, including the recently commenced Work-Life Balance Initiative.
The seminar featured sessions on strategic leadership, effective communication, decision-making, conflict management and ethical conduct, providing participants with practical knowledge to improve their leadership capabilities and workplace relationships.
Miko delivered the first session, titled, “Leadership and Followership: Building a Culture of Collaboration and Excellence,” during which he highlighted the complementary roles of leaders and followers in building a productive and high-performing organisation.
He urged participants to translate the lessons learnt at the seminar into practical improvements in their respective areas of responsibility, stressing that leadership development should ultimately contribute to better service delivery.
The Acting Area Controller also reassured stakeholders and members of the trading community that the Command remained committed to professionalism, transparency and the promotion of ease of doing business.
Participants at the seminar were drawn from the rank of Chief Superintendent of Customs to Deputy Comptroller of Customs, reflecting the Command’s focus on developing leadership capacity among its senior officers.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of Certificates of Excellence to Assistant Comptroller J.O. Ezekuse, Officer-in-Charge of Mile 2 Gate, and Chief Superintendent of Customs C.A. Ibrahim, Officer-in-Charge of the Legal Unit of the Command.
Presenting the certificates, Miko said the recognition formed part of the Command’s mechanism for identifying and rewarding officers who demonstrated diligence, selflessness and commitment to efficient service delivery.
He encouraged all officers to remain dedicated to their responsibilities and continue giving their best in service to the country, assuring them that hard work, professionalism and exceptional performance would be recognised and rewarded.
The Acting Area Controller further stressed the importance of sustaining a culture of excellence across the Command, noting that effective leadership and motivated personnel were essential to achieving the objectives of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The leadership seminar therefore provided an avenue for senior officers to strengthen their understanding of leadership principles while reinforcing the Command’s commitment to professionalism, teamwork, ethical conduct and improved service delivery.
Through the initiative, the PTML Area Command reaffirmed its determination to maintain an efficient and service-oriented workforce capable of facilitating legitimate trade, generating revenue and supporting the broader objectives of the Nigeria Customs Service.
