The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has commiserated with the government and people of Jigawa State and the royal family of the Gumel Emirate over the death of the late Emir of Gumel, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.
CGC Adeniyi conveyed his condolences through the Acting Customs Area Controller, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, who represented him at the funeral prayer held at the Gumel Emirate Palace.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Tahir Balarabe, on Friday, 5 September 2026, DC Adamu described the death of the traditional ruler as a significant loss to the Gumel Emirate, Jigawa State and Nigeria.
He said the late Emir would be remembered for his decades of selfless service to his people, commitment to peace and unity, as well as his concern for the welfare and development of the Gumel Emirate.
“The death of His Royal Highness is a great loss to the Gumel Emirate, Jigawa State and indeed Nigeria. He was a respected traditional leader who dedicated many years to the service of his people, while consistently supporting the efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service and other agencies operating within his domain to safeguard our borders and promote legitimate trade,” he said.
DC Adamu further conveyed the Comptroller-General’s sympathy to the bereaved royal family, subjects and the entire people of Gumel, praying for strength for them to bear the loss.
“On behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the people of Gumel and the government and people of Jigawa State. At this difficult moment, we share in their grief and pray that Almighty Allah grants the deceased eternal rest and gives his family, subjects and loved ones the strength to bear the loss,” he added.
The funeral prayer attracted prominent dignitaries from within and outside Jigawa State, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Governors of Jigawa and Kano States, royal fathers, government officials and thousands of mourners who gathered to pay their final respects to the late monarch.
The late Emir, who reportedly spent 46 years on the throne, was described as one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in the history of the Gumel Emirate.
His long reign saw him play a significant role in the affairs of the emirate, with his leadership centred on the welfare of his subjects, preservation of peace and support for development initiatives.
The Nigeria Customs Service also acknowledged his support for its operations and those of other government agencies within his domain, particularly in the areas of border protection and the promotion of legitimate trade.
The Service, through CGC Adeniyi, prayed for the repose of the soul of the late Emir and for Allah to grant the Gumel royal family, his subjects and the people of Jigawa State the fortitude to cope with his passing.
