Football icon Lionel Messi has donated €80,000 to support the reconstruction of Spain’s Sierra Oeste region, which was devastated by recent wildfires.
The donation, made through the official relief initiative of the Madrid regional government, is aimed at assisting communities affected by the disaster as authorities continue efforts to rebuild homes, restore infrastructure and provide relief to thousands of displaced residents.
President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, expressed gratitude to the Argentine football legend for the humanitarian gesture, describing it as an act of generosity that reflects compassion beyond the football pitch.
“I want to thank him. The people of Madrid hope to welcome him soon and give him the applause he truly deserves,” Ayuso said while acknowledging the contribution.
The Sierra Oeste region was among the areas hardest hit by the wildfire, with the blaze affecting 17 municipalities, destroying more than 27,000 hectares of land and forcing the evacuation or confinement of over 55,000 residents. The disaster left significant damage to homes, farmland and public infrastructure, prompting the regional government to launch a reconstruction and recovery campaign.
Messi’s donation has been widely praised by football fans and members of the public, with many describing it as another example of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s commitment to humanitarian causes.
Throughout his career, Messi has supported numerous charitable initiatives through personal donations and the Leo Messi Foundation, funding projects focused on education, healthcare and emergency relief in different parts of the world.
