The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has clarified that its petrol sales discount, which will run until October 31, 2026, is a customer relief initiative and does not represent the restoration of petroleum subsidy.

The company said the initiative was designed to ease the burden of rising petrol prices on Nigerians amid elevated global crude oil prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a press release issued on Friday, October 9, 2026, and signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, NNPC Ltd. reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices on households, businesses and the wider economy.
The clarification followed a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026, on measures to provide relief to Nigerians amid prevailing global market uncertainties.
NNPC Ltd. explained that it had introduced the sales discount on October 1, 2026, to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, but had subsequently extended the initiative until the end of October.
According to the company, the discount will remain available at NNPC Retail stations nationwide throughout the period.
It stressed that the initiative was intended to provide direct relief to customers facing increased petrol costs, rather than reintroduce government subsidy on petroleum products.
The company acknowledged that rising petrol prices have significant implications for daily living, affecting transportation costs, business operations, household expenses and the livelihoods of Nigerians.
It said the discount was introduced in recognition of the financial strain experienced by families and businesses, particularly during a period of heightened uncertainty in the international crude oil market.
NNPC Ltd. also emphasised that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s approach to providing practical relief to citizens while maintaining the existing market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.
The company clarified that the discount applies specifically to its retail outlets and does not establish a uniform pump price for petrol across the country.
It further noted that the initiative does not alter the market-based pricing structure governing petroleum products in Nigeria.
The clarification is intended to address interpretations suggesting that the extension of the discount amounts to a reversal of the Federal Government’s petroleum subsidy removal policy.
NNPC Ltd. urged Nigerians to disregard such interpretations, maintaining that the initiative is a temporary customer relief measure aimed at reducing the immediate impact of higher fuel prices.
The company reiterated its commitment to ensuring reliable petroleum product supply and strengthening collaboration with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to help ease the economic pressure on Nigerians.
It added that its operations would continue to prioritise practical customer support while maintaining commercial responsibility.
NNPC Ltd. also pledged to sustain clear communication regarding its products, prices and customer initiatives to enable Nigerians to make informed purchasing decisions.
The company expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their continued patronage and support, assuring the public that it would remain committed to responsible customer service and reliable product supply.
