The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, has clarified that his reference to the AK-47 was a metaphor for firmness, resilience and unwavering determination, rather than a call for violence or the use of firearms, saying the expression was intended to communicate the importance of standing firmly by one’s democratic choice.

At the heart of Tenebe’s message was a simple political metaphor: just as the AK-47 is popularly associated with strength, firmness and reliability, the electorate must demonstrate the same qualities in protecting the integrity of their votes and ensuring that their democratic choices are not casually compromised.
The APC chairman said the reference was therefore never intended to introduce violence into the electoral conversation, but to underscore the strength of conviction required of citizens who participate in the democratic process. In that context, the “strength” invoked was the strength of political resolve, not the strength of arms.
For Tenembe, defending the vote is fundamentally a civic responsibility. It means remaining vigilant throughout the electoral process, insisting on transparency, and ensuring that a ballot freely cast is not simply abandoned when the responsibility of accountability begins.
The chairman’s clarification also places the controversial expression within the broader language of political symbolism, where familiar objects are sometimes used to communicate ideas of resilience, durability and determination. His AK-47 analogy, he explained, belongs squarely within that figurative context.
He stressed that such firmness must, however, remain firmly anchored in the law. Electoral vigilance, he maintained, must be expressed through peaceful participation, lawful observation, responsible engagement and the legitimate mechanisms available within Nigeria’s democratic framework.
The distinction, Tenebe noted, is important: the message was about being strong in conviction, steadfast in political choice and unwavering in democratic participation; not about wielding weapons or encouraging confrontation.
The essence of the analogy, therefore, was resilience without violence and firmness without lawlessness.
Against that backdrop, Tenebe urged the electorate to understand the statement in its intended spirit; as a call for citizens to value their votes, remain alert to the electoral process and stand responsibly behind their lawful choices.
For him, the real power of the AK-47 analogy lies not in the weapon itself, but in the qualities it was being used symbolically to represent: strength, firmness, reliability and resolve.
