The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has welcomed the $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) on the Ima Gas Project, describing it as a landmark development that affirms the growing viability of Nigeria’s upstream gas sector.
According to a statement released on Friday, September 25, 2026, by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Limited, the Ima Gas Project is located offshore in Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 112 and 117 and is being developed by AMNI International in partnership with TotalEnergies.
The project is expected to produce about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day at peak production.
The gas output will supply critical feedgas to Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) in support of its Train 7 expansion, which will increase the capacity of the Bonny Island plant from 22 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 30 Mtpa.
NNPC Ltd said the Final Investment Decision was enabled by the Presidential Directives of 2024, which provided fiscal incentives for non-associated gas projects, streamlined contracting processes and lowered development costs.
The company noted that Ima is the fourth major gas project to reach FID under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the Iseni, Ubeta and HI gas projects.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the development as “a decisive vote of confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector and in the bold reforms” that have created competitive terms and a predictable investment environment.
NNPC Ltd also commended the collaboration between AMNI International, TotalEnergies and the Nigerian financial sector, describing the model of an indigenous operator, international partner and domestic capital as a template for future developments.
The company said the partnership demonstrates the potential for collaboration among Nigerian companies, international energy firms and domestic financial institutions in advancing major projects within the country’s gas sector.
NNPC Ltd reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government, regulators and industry partners to sustain investment momentum and deploy Nigeria’s gas resources for industrialisation, job creation and long-term prosperity.
The company said continued investment in the gas sector would help unlock the value of Nigeria’s gas resources while supporting economic growth and strengthening the country’s energy industry.
